Green Workshop

 AUROVILLE GREEN PRACTICES WORKSHOP

5TH TO 9TH JANUARY,2015

 A group of 33 students from Piloo Mody College of Architecture attended a workshop on the Green Practices at Auroville, Pondicherry from 5th to 9th January conducted by the Auroville Consultants. Students had a hands on experience in this 5 day workshop along with site visits in and around Auroville.

 DAY 1: BAMBOO WORKSHOP BY WALTER AND BALU.

Students were given presentations on Bamboo types and bamboo as a building material and also on the techniques of usage of bamboo. And later the students themselves worked in groups to make a fish-mouth joint in bamboo, a bamboo weaved mud plaster wall and techniques of straightening and slicing of bamboos.

 DAY 2: PRESENTATIONS

Students attend presentations by various experts at Unity Pavilion on Day 2 of the workshop :

  1. Concept of Auroville, A Dream by Vashi Kapoor

  2. Eco Sanitation by Dr.Lucas Dengel

  3. Alternative Building Materials by Manu Gopalan, Sacred Groves.

  4. Sustainable Energy Solutions by Toine Van Megan.

 DAY 3: WORKSHOP ON COMPRESSED STABILISED EARTH BLOCKS.

Students in groups of 16 worked on the mixing, watering, curing and compressing processes of making CSE BLOCKS while the other 16 students worked on the formwork, mixing and ramming of the RAMMED EARTH WALL.

This workshop was conducted by Mohan from Earth Centre, Auroville. Later the students made arches and checked the loads.

 DAY 4: WORKSHOP ON FERRO CEMENT BY SINDHU AND ALEXANDER

Students were instructed and familiarized with ferro-cement as a building material and its working procedure by Ar. Sindhu and Ar. Alexander and Mohan from the Earth Centre helped the students to construct slabs and domes of ferro-cement.

 DAY 5: SITE VISITS

Site visits to Sacred Groves, The nursery, Swaram - The Music School, Visitor’s Centre and Matri Mandir was allotted for the last day of the workshop.

Students gathered at VERITE, AN AUROVILLIAN COMMUNITY for the distribution of the certificate and also for a spiritual meditation session.

The trip concluded with a few hours of site visit to the French colony and sea shore area of Pondicherry
